Probiotics – Why do we need them?
We are constantly exposed to antibiotics through our food:
Did you know that commercially raised animals for meat and dairy products are exposed to approximately 30 different antibiotics, all of which are approved by the FDA?
Sure these antibiotics aid in removing the “bad” bacterial, but unfortunately they are also detrimental to “good” bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.
The use of antibiotics in food production poses certain public health risks, including the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and the possibility for allergic reactions in certain people. Furthermore, the balance of good bacterial verses bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract gets disrupted; this balance is vital for optimal digestion and immune system functioning.
What are Probiotics?
Probiotic means “pro life” or “for life” and refers to beneficial bacteria. Probiotics in adequate amounts may have the ability to crowd out harmful bacteria, promote optimal digestion, assist immune function, and increase the resistance to infections.
Of course simply taking a dietary supplement is not sufficient for superior gastrointestinal health; many other factors play a role also, such as optimal nutritional intake and immune system support.
I recommend speaking with a physician or nutritionist to find out if a probiotic supplement would be beneficial for your health. Furthermore, not all probiotic products are created equal. Purchase one from a company you trust or that your healthcare provider has recommended.
